Abstract
Tematem rozprawy jest prezentacja i ocena metafizyki australijskiego tomisty analitycznego Barry’ego Millera. Celem rozprawy jest zbadanie, czy metafizyka Millera stanowi udane rozwinięcie metafizyki Akwinaty, oraz tego, jaki wpływ na rezultaty osiągnięte przez Millera miało zastosowanie idei i metod zaczerpniętych z filozofii analitycznej. Rozprawa składa się z siedmiu rozdziałów pogrupowanych w dwie części. Część pierwsza, zatytułowana „Prezentacja metafizyki Barry’ego Millera”, składa się z trzech rozdziałów, poświęconych kolejno: koncepcji istnienia, argumentowi za istnieniem Boga oraz problematyce natury Boga. Część druga, zatytułowana „Dyskusja nad wybranymi składnikami metafizyki Barry’ego Millera”, składa się z czterech rozdziałów. W rozdziale czwartym badany jest sposób, w jaki Miller przedstawia relację między indywiduum a jego istnieniem. Rozdział piąty poświęcony jest zagadnieniu, czy i w jaki sposób Millera koncepcja relacji między indywiduum a istnieniem może stanowić punkt wyjścia metafizycznego argumentu za istnieniem Boga. W rozdziale szóstym badana jest argumentacja Millera przeciw możliwości nieskończonych ciągów pośrednich przyczyn istnienia. Rozdział siódmy poświęcony jest Millera ujęciu doktryny prostoty
Bożej.
The subject of the dissertation is the presentation and evaluation of the metaphysics of Australian analytical Thomist Barry Miller. The purpose of the dissertation is to examine whether Miller’s metaphysics represents a successful development of Aquinas’s metaphysics, and how Miller’s results were influenced by the application of ideas and methods drawn from analytic philosophy. The dissertation consists of seven chapters grouped into two parts. Part One, entitled “Presentation of Barry Miller’s Metaphysics,” consists of three chapters, dealing respectively with the concept of existence, the argument for the existence of God, and the problem of the nature of God. Part two, entitled “Discussion of Selected Components of Barry Miller's Metaphysics,” consists of four chapters. Chapter four examines how Miller presents the relationship between the individual and his existence. Chapter five is dedicated to showing whether and how Miller’s conception of the relationship between the individual and existence can be a starting point of a metaphysical argument for the existence of God. In chapter six, Miller’s argument against the possibility of infinite sequences of intermediate causes of existence is examined. Chapter seven discusses to Miller’s account of the doctrine of the simplicity of God.
