    Sino-American Rivalry in Space—Selected Strategic and Political Issues

    This article will describe three closely intertwined aspects of space rivalry between the U.S. and China against the background of their general relationship. The first refers to strategic considerations related to the military as a tool of global influence. The second covers the process of securitisation of the Chinese advancement in space applications in the United States. And finally, we will address the competition for international prestige, which is one of the essential factors of Sino-American relations.

    Addressing Russian Threat. Changes to Defence Policies of the Nordic States After 2014

    The substantial deterioration of the security environment after Russian aggression against Ukraine and the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 was a catalyst for significant changes in the Nordic states’ approach to security and defence. Common perceptions of the Russian threat focused defence policies of the Nordic states around rebuilding total defence capabilities, which would combine military and civilian efforts. Besides these efforts to reinforce national capacity to defend against an armed attack, the Nordic states increased regional security and defence cooperation, along with cooperation with NATO, the EU and the United States. The article explores the developments in defence policies of the Nordic states that were a result of changes in the security environment caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine and the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. It tries to discuss differences in national threat assessment, and then compare and contrast unique national approaches to defence policies that were adopted by the Nordic states. The conclusion conceptualizes unique features of the Nordic approach to defence stemming from the common threat to their security.

    The Transformation of Social Bonds During a Period of Intensified Online Studying and Work Caused by the SARS-CoV2 Pandemic—the Case of Poland

    Classic sociology evaluates and explores changes in social bonds. The last discussion on significant changes in social bonds at Polish universities took place when they experienced a deep transformation after the collapse of communism in Eastern and Central Europe in 1989. Thirty years later, the period of lockdown triggered by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has provided an interesting opportunity to examine how social order is created and social bonds developed without direct, face-to-face interactions. The authors use the schema of social bond formation by Jan Szczepański to analyze the nature of the stages and elements of social bonds built during a time of enforced indirect methods of teaching, studying, working and communicating in general. The article presents the results of research (survey CAWI) conducted on a sample of 555 students of three Polish universities representing various fields of study (divided in the article into two categories: technical and non-technical). The results exhibit the significance of gender and the field of study in adjusting to the new circumstances of online learning including the impeded process of creating social bonds (especially at the very beginning of studies when direct contacts are needed). The authors discuss the consequences of weakening social bonds within academia whilst also referring to the phenomena of social capital, the strength of weak ties and dormant ties.

    Kryzys na granicy polsko-białoruskiej jako przejaw wojny hybrydowej. Aspekty administracyjnoprawne

    Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje rozważania dotyczące administracyjno-prawnych aspektów kryzysu migracyjnego na granicy polsko-białoruskiej. Jego celem jest podjęcie próby przedstawienia ram prawnych kryzysu migracyjnego oraz sformułowania postulatów, których realizacja może przyczynić się do jego rozwiązania. Przedmiotowe traktowanie ludzi przez władze białoruskie i bezduszne używanie ich do osiągnięcia określonych zamierzeń politycznych należy uznać za przejaw tzw. wojny hybrydowej. Sytuacja ta wymaga złożonej reakcji, w której wątki prawne, dyplomatyczne, gospodarcze i polityczne – jako odpowiednia narracja informacyjna – zostaną połączone. To jedyny sposób na przeciwdziałanie próbom instrumentalnego traktowania cudzoziemców, których zdrowie i życie są zagrożone. Bez względu bowiem na ich status prawny są istotami ludzkimi i opieka nad nimi powinna być prowadzona w duchu humanitaryzmu i zgodnie z zasadami prawa zarówno krajowego, jak i międzynarodowego. Jako wiodącą w pracy zastosowano metodę dogmatyczną. Ze względu na dużą dynamikę sytuacji na granicy uwzględniono stan prawny z dnia 1 listopada 2021 r.
