dc.description.abstract	The presented article aims to show the respect and dignity which have been given to the Eucharist since the fi rst centuries of Christianity. In a special way, this respect was demonstrated by the demands placed upon those who wanted to receive Holy Communion or even just participate in the celebration of the Eucharist. During the pontificate of St. Ambrose and St. Augustine, on the basis of their letters, two issues related to the worthy receiving of the Eucharist can be seen: in Ambrose - to deny the emperor participation in the Eucharist because of the massacres in Thessalonica and promoting pagan cults, in Augustine – the issue of the fasts. The presented article consists of three parts. First, it discusses the essence of the Eucharist shown in the letters of both bishops. Then, the position of St. Ambrose and the solution of St. Augustine. From the reading of their letters it appears that the proper and worthy receiving of the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ lied heavily on their minds, regardless of who the recipient of the letter was. In all texts there is a conclusion – the condition for a worthy receiving of the Body of the Lord, which is the Sacrament of unity, is abiding in the Catholic Church, and consequently following the ecclesiastical instructions and norms regarding either fasting or the issue of the reconciliation and penance.	pl
