    A case for two voices in Old Church Slavonic – reflexively marked OCS verbs

    Old Church Slavonic data manifest significant similarities in the distribution and formal properties of anticausatives, reflexives, subject experiencer verbs, statives, and reciprocals, while their semantics may also be viewed as partly uniform. The structures representing the said classes of verbs are very frequent in the language, while passive structures, formed with analytic morpho-syntactic constructions, are relatively infrequent. Consequently, the expressions headed by anticausatives, reflexives, subject experiencer verbs, statives, and reciprocals (as well as dative impersonal structures) encroach on the area of semantics belonging in Modern Slavic to be the realm expressed in terms of passive morpho-syntax. The conclusion that can be drawn from this state of affairs is that Old Church Slavonic is characterized by the opposition of active and middle voices, while the passive voice is in its infancy.

    A comparison of the modal dać się structure with the dispositional middle in Polish

    The paper compares the modal dać się structure with the dispositional middle in Polish. It is argued that the two structures are similar as regards argument realization, i.e. in both constructions, the theme argument appears in the structural subject position. The two structures also have a dispositional meaning in common. However, they show a number of differences. They differ in the presence of a syntactically active agent, their aspectual properties, the availability of episodic interpretations, the obligatory presence of an adverbial modifier, and verb class restrictions. Although these differences seem to argue against a common syntactic derivation for the two structures analysed here, they do not preclude classifying the modal dać się structure as a subtype of the dispositional middle. If middles are seen as a notional category, understood as a special meaning that different grammatical structures can have, along the lines postulated by Condoravdi (1989), then the modal dać się structure can be subsumed under the label of middle. In fact, it is argued that the modal dać się structure represents Type II middles in Ackema and Schoorlemmer’s (2005) typology, and it shows properties typical of lassen-middles in German (Pitteroff 2014).

    A study on the relationship between musical ability and EFL pronunciation proficiency

    This study investigates the relationship between musical ability and pronunciation proficiency of English as a foreign language [EFL] of university students of English philology. English pronunciation of the participants is evaluated by academic teachers of English in three categories: the general impression of the foreign or native accent, the accuracy of production of English sounds and the use of word stress and intonation. This experiment was conducted entirely online. Participants’ musical ability was tested using Gordon’s Advanced Measure of Music Audiation [AMMA]. The results of this study demonstrate a moderately positive correlation between musicality and FL pronunciation proficiency. The more musical students, the higher marks from the judges. The present findings seem to be consistent with other studies which suggest that musical skills may positively affect the acquisition of foreign language pronunciation.

    Azor d’Aunillon : l’équivoque du langage dans un récit utopique de 1750

    Bien que placée dans la collection de Garnier, l’œuvre méconnue d’Aullinon parue en 1750, Azor, ne respecte pas les règles génériques suivies par la plupart des utopies littéraires. Pourtant, ce récit à structure complexe présente une réflexion critique sur l’épanouissement des sociétés policées. Le changement vécu par une communauté insulaire muette en apprenant à parler, met en cause l’avenir de cette société heureuse, alors qu’aucun commentaire du narrateur ne souligne ce tournant dans l’utopie. Dans Azor, le langage devient un objet équivoque qui permet d’observer les étapes nécessaires pour accéder à la réflexion philosophique mais met aussi implicitement en lumière les lacunes d’un progrès trop hâtif. À travers la trame romanesque, le jugement sur la civilisation révèle un examen approfondi et perspicace des espoirs et des défis propres à l’entreprise des Lumières qui s’articule dans un récit utopique comme dans un laboratoire d’idées. L’œuvre d’Aunillon s’inscrit dans les débats du milieu du siècle en exprimant une affirmation nuancée des bienfaits de la civilisation.

    Comparative analysis of American and Russian political discourse: A discourse analysis study

    This article provides an exhaustive analysis of American and Russian political discourse through the examination of the linguistic techniques employed by President Joe Biden and President Putin in their speeches. The aim of this research is to examine the linguistic approaches employed in referencing social and political traditions in the United States and Russia, investigate disparities in linguistic strategies within both political discourses, and assess variations in semantic outcomes. The analysis has been conducted to answer the following research questions: (1) What are the linguistic methods of referring to social and political traditions in America and Russia? (2) Do the linguistic strategies differ depending on the political discourse? (3) Is the semantic output different depending on the political discourse? The findings reveal marked differences between the two discourses, reflecting the social and political discrepancies between the political systems of the United States and Russia.

    Derivatives based on participles in Irish and Polish and the inflection–derivation distinction

    Greenberg’s Universal 28 says that ‘if both the derivation and inflection follow the root, or they both precede the root, the derivation is always between the root and the inflection’ (Greenberg 1966: 93). Booij (1994: 27) undermines this by allowing inherent inflection to feed derivation. There is abundant literature showing that inherent inflection can feed derivation in Germanic, Romance and Slavic languages (Booij 1994, 1996, Chapman 1996, Rainer 1996, Cetnarowska 1999). The aim of this paper is to describe and compare derivational categories related to participle forms in Irish and Polish. These include among others agent nouns, adjectives of tendency/inclination, resultative passive adjectives and facilitative adjectives. Stump (2005: 52) points out that the terms present and past participle are, in fact, misnomers since participles are uninflected for tense, and they should be regarded as stems conveying aspect information plus the lexical information of the root. The existence of derivatives based on inflected forms is usually taken as evidence against the inflection-derivation dichotomy, and in favour of a tripartition into contextual inflection, inherent inflection and derivation. The paper addresses the theoretical ramifications of the existence of such derivatives for inferential-realisational approaches (Stump 2001), such as for example Beard’s (1995) Lexeme-Morpheme Base Morphology, which separates the operations on the grammatical (morpholexical and morphosyntactic) features and operations responsible for the morphophonological modification of the root/stem.

    Euphemisms and teacher–student interactions

    The quality of teacher-student interactions appears to be one of the most significant prerequisites for effective instruction. One of the factors involved in determining this quality is definitely teacher talk that should adequately correspond both to the type of knowledge the teacher intends to transfer and students’ ability to absorb this knowledge. The latter we claim is directly related to the students’ attitude to the subject itself and the teacher. In this article we will delve into the problem of euphemisms as part of teacher and student talk with a view to determining the extent to which they might affect teacher-student interactions. The issue of euphemism use and their role in building positive relations in the language classroom will be discussed from the perspective of teachers’ experiences. To this end, we chose the research tool of an online questionnaire addressed at university teachers. The survey was administered in June 2023 and the results will be described and analyzed in the forthcoming pages. Euphemism use will also be considered as a manifestation of language creativity that should characterize good language teachers.

    Fragments of the Liturgical-Musical Codex from the Archdiocesan Archive of Gniezno (Poland): Source Analysis and Provenance Hypotheses

    This paper discusses hitherto unidentified loose folios of a parchment liturgical and musical book held in the Archdiocesan Archive of Gniezno (Poland), containing the offertory and communion antiphons for the feasts De Trinitate and Corpus Christi. The author provides the codicological description of the leaves (analyzing Latin script, musical notation, ornamentation); identifies the time of their creation (15th century); indicates the type of the liturgical book to which they belong (graduale); seeks a melodic model for them and puts forward provenance hypotheses. He states that the melodics of the antiphons, although closest to the Cistercian tradition, are nevertheless variantly different from the melodic line preserved in foreign and Polish codices. It is possible to narrow down the dating of the leaves thanks to the type of Latin script, the calligraphic ornamentation of the initials and the spelling of certain letters. Artykuł prezentuje niezidentyfikowane dotychczas luźne karty pergaminowe księgi liturgiczno-muzycznej przechowywane w Archiwum Archidiecezjalnym w Gnieźnie. Autor dokonuje ich opisu kodykologicznego (pismo łacińskie, notacja muzyczna, zdobienia); określa czas powstania; wskazuje typ księgi, do jakiej należą (graduale); poszukuje ich wzorca melodycznego oraz stawia hipotezy proweniencyjne. Stwierdza, iż melodyka antyfon, choć najbliższa przekazom cysterskim, wariantowo różni się jednak zarówno od przekazu w kodeksach obcych, jak i polskich. Datację kart (XV wiek) precyzuje rodzaj pisma łacińskiego, zdobienia inicjałów oraz pisownia niektórych liter.

    Is there a method in this… madness? On variance between two manuscript copies of a Middle English Psalter

    The objective of the paper is to determine the extent and the possible sources of the intertextual lexical variation between two manuscript copies of a single Middle English Psalter known, among other names, as the Middle English Glossed Prose Psalter. The purpose of the paper can be understood only if one approaches the variance from a medieval perspective on text with respect for the inherent features of manuscript culture and an understanding of the exceptional character of the text analysed in the study, which topics are briefly discussed within the paper. The extent of the variance is measured in relation to the nominal choices attested in the two copies of the text, the rationale behind the variation being sought separately in each case, taking into account the contextual intricacies of all the occurrences of the nouns under analysis.

    Methodology for conducting linguistic research into visual impairment: Challenges and recommendations

    Despite great value of research into visual impairment (VI), there is a dearth of empirical studies in linguistics investigating the extent to which the sense of seeing impacts language development, processing and production. The lack of methodological rigour in previous studies as well as large diversity of the population, small incidence of visual impairment and little awareness of blind people’s needs make this field of study challenging for researchers. This article presents and discusses the most challenging aspects of performing experimental studies in the field of VI. The overarching aim of this paper is to guide good research practice which ensures robust and unbiased experimental design and at the same time respects individuality of people with VI.

    Opodatkowanie wiernych na rzecz prac remontowo-budowlanych w diecezji lubelskiej, na podstawie uchwał zgromadzeń parafialnych z lat 1919-1923

    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie na konkretnych przykładach podstaw prawnych opodatkowania wiernych na cele remontowo-budowlane w parafiach diecezji lubelskiej w pierwszych latach II Rzeczypospolitej, rodzaju ponoszonych przez nich obciążeń oraz trybu egzekwowania obowiązkowych powinności ustanowionych przez zgromadzenia parafialne. Analiza problemu badawczego przeprowadzona została w oparciu o materiał archiwalny znajdujący się w zasobie Archiwum Akt Nowych w Warszawie (w zespole Ministerstwa Wyznań Religijnych i Oświecenia Publicznego) oraz w Archiwum Archidiecezjalnym Lubelskim. Inwestycje podejmowane w parafiach wymagały zaangażowania wszystkich wiernych do odbudowy zniszczonych działaniami wojennymi kościołów, plebanii, budynków dla służby kościelnej i obiektów gospodarczych. W oparciu o obowiązujące przepisy prawne, decyzję o przystąpieniu do prac remontowo-budowlanych podejmowało zgromadzenie parafialne zwoływane pod przewodnictwem wójta lub sołtysa oraz dozoru kościelnego, które uchwalało na powyższe cele określony podatek. Był on rozkładany na wszystkich mieszkańców i uiszczany w walucie lub w zbożu, w wysokości proporcjonalnej do liczby posiadanych morgów ziemi. Podstawą wejścia w życie podjętej uchwały było jej zatwierdzenie przez władze wojewódzkie i ministerialne. Postanowienia zgromadzeń parafialnych obligowały mieszkańców do świadczenia pomocy materialnej i fizycznej na rzecz podejmowanych inwestycji, a podatki płacone na ten cel stanowiły podstawowy fundusz budowlany parafii. The present paper presents and exemplifies the legal basis of taxation of the faithful for renovation and construction purposes in the parishes of the Lublin diocese in the first years of the Second Polish Republic, and discusses the types of burdens incurred by the faithful as well as the ways of enforcing obligations established by parish assemblies. The analysis is based on the materials from the Archives of Modern Records in Warsaw (the collection of the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Education) and Lublin Archdiocesan Archives. Investments undertaken in the parishes required the involvement of all the faithful in the reconstruction of churches, rectories, church servants’ quarters and farm buildings destroyed during the war. In accordance with the applicable legal provisions, decisions to start renovation and construction works were made by parish assemblies held under the chairmanship of the mayor or village administrator and the church supervision. Parish assemblies also passed a tax for these purposes. It was imposed on all inhabitants and paid in currency or in grain in proportion to the acreage of land owned. Tax resolutions in question came into force after approval from regional and ministerial authorities. Under the decisions of parish assemblies, inhabitants were obliged to contribute financially or in person to undertaken works, and the taxes they paid were the main component of parishes’ construction budgets.

    Prawno-polityczne aspekty wyboru przewodniczącego Komisji Europejskiej w latach 2004-2019

    Stanowisko przewodniczącego Komisji Europejskiej było i pozostaje jednym z najważniejszych w strukturze obsadzanych funkcji w całej Unii Europejskiej. Z formalno-prawnego punktu widzenia szef KE plasuje się po przewodniczącym Rady Europejskiej. Jednakże z uwagi na praktyczne prerogatywy przyznawane mu w traktatach, często traktowany bywa jako osoba pierwsza, czyli najważniejsza. Stąd wyborom przewodniczącego Komisji z reguły towarzyszyły emocje polityczne. W latach 2004-2019 doszło do największego rozszerzenia Wspólnot Europejskich, ale także do odrzucenia oraz przyjęcia nowych, podstawowych aktów prawnych. Jakkolwiek umieszczone w nich przepisy określające tryb wyboru przewodniczącego KE, którego kompetencje poszerzano, w zasadzie nie ulegały większym modyfikacjom, to zdecydowanie zmieniała się ich prawna interpretacja. Główną osią sporu było przejmowanie przez Parlament Europejski prerogatywy, desygnowania kandydata na szefa KE, dotychczas przynależnej Radzie Europejskiej. The post of president of the European Commission has been and still remains one of the most important in the structure of functions within the whole European Union. From the formal point of view the EC head is placed after the president of the European Council. However, due to the practical prerogatives assigned to him in treaties, they are often treated as the first and most important person. Hence, the elections of the president of the Commission were usually accompanied by political emotions. In the years 2004-2019 the largest extension of European Communities took place but at the same time some basic legal acts were rejected and the new ones were adopted. Although their provisions, which determined the procedure for electing the president of EC and which extended the latter’s competences, did not in principle undergo any greater modifications, their legal interpretation was definitely changed. The main axis of dispute was the European Parliament taking over the prerogative of appointing a candidate for the head of EC, till then belonging to the European Council.

    Psalm Differentiae in the Fifteenth-Century Olivetan Psalter Manuscript at the Łódź Archdiocesan Museum in Poland

    This article presents the psalm differentiae in the fifteenth-century Olivetan Psalter kept at the Łódź Archdiocesan Museum, the only book of this provenance that has been identified in Poland. The author identifies psalm differentiae and determines the degree to which they belong to the most widely applied euouae schemata in musical manuscripts and to what extent this book may contains euouae melodic variants without a correspondence in the chant tradition. The codex contains single psalm cadences which, if confirmed by further source research, may be considered original.

    The paper constitutes a review of a collection of articles entitled ‘Various Dimensions of Contrastive Studies’ published by Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego in 2016 under the editorship of Bożena Cetnarowska, Marcin Kuczok and Marcin Zabawa. Each section of the review contains a critical evaluation of one paper found in the volume. We conclude that although the volume could benefit from more direct discussion pertaining to the methodology of contrastive studies, each of the articles constitutes a significant contribution to its particular domain and is worth-recommending to the reader who desires to keep track of the developments within different areas of the study of language.
