    Ambroży o starości w swoich listach

    The correspondence of St Ambrose, of which 91 letters survive, provides a picture of his pastoral and social activities. His letters were directed to people of differing ages and classes; in some of them one can find his views on ageing, its features and dangers and how the old should be cared for. The period of old age is, according to the Bishop of Milan, the period of becoming a perfect men. Ambrose considered that with advancing age man grows towards perfection and maturity in the human sense, but more importantly in the moral and religious sense. He taught that everyone must try to improve themselves gradually throughout life by conversion and repentance, achieving maturity and perfection by the time of death.

    Biblia i nadzieja na jej dobre tłumaczenie

    In the above article, based on the correspondence of St. Jerome and St. Augustine, there has been shown how these two outstanding the Bible experts, translators and interpreters understood the principles used in its translation. In three parts – entitled: Work, Man, Way – the importance and significance of the Bible and its translations, above all the Septuagint, the tasks and features of the man who translates, the methods and ways of translating were shown. Both of them in their letters indicated: the necessity of an exceptional and proper ap­proach to the Holy Scriptures, a good preparation of the translator and the use of a method that would be appropriate to the translated piece: in the case of the Bible – a beautiful translation preserving the arrangement of the words of the inspired Scriptures; and in the case of non-canonical pieces – expressing the thoughts using the rules of the language into which the work is translated.

    Certainly one of the greatest phenomena of Christianity are the masses of martyrs who gave and still give their lives for Christ. In particular, martyrdom’s spirituality was characteristic of the first centuries of Christianity, and Roman Africa was undoubtedly the region that exceled in the number of martyrs, in the number of known acts of martyrdom and encouragements for martyrdom. In this article, based on existing ancient testimonies from the writings of Tertullian, Cyprian, the acts of the martyrs, Augustine, Arnobius and Lactantius, martyrdom is shown as one of the main features of North African spirituality.

    The Eschatological Aspects of the Monastic Life in St. Jerome’s Letters

    In the year 1953, a New Testament scholar named Charles Harold Dodd published a book titled The Interpretation of the Fourth Gospel which revolutionized the way of thinking about Christian eschatology. In his opus vitae, Charles Dodd argued based on the Gospel of John that apocalyptic realities are in fact already realized through Jesus and His Apostles’ ministry. On this premise, he coined the term “realized eschatology”, in which all announcements concerning the Kingdom of God had already been realized according to Dodd. This “realized eschatology” can be seen through various realities of everyday life of the community of believers. In the case of Saint Jerome of Stridon, he saw the eschatological reality in the monastic lifestyle. This article aims to show what eschatological signs are present in the description of the monastic community found in the letters of Saint Jerome. For in his letters many times he refers to eschatological realities already present in monastic life, which is for him a kind of paradise on earth and the fulfilment of Christ’s eschatological prophecies.

    Figura Maryi w pastoralnym przepowiadaniu wybranych Ojców Kościoła

    W dotychczasowej literaturze dotyczącej mariologii patrystycznej, stosunkowo mało miejsca poświęcano badaniom nad przepowiadaniem pastoralnym Ojców Kościoła, co było skutkiem mniejszej liczby takich wypowiedzi Ojców Kościoła. Pisarze wczesnochrześcijańscy bowiem, w okresie formowania doktryny, także tej w zakresie mariologii, w obliczu walki z herezjami, więcej uwagi poświęcali rozstrzygnięciom dogmatycznym niż kwestiom pastoralnym. W niniejszym zatem artykule opierając się na wybranych, reprezentatywnych dziełach autorów wczesnochrześcijańskich, związanych z codziennym życiem i troską duszpasterską, został ukazany obraz Maryi, jaki autorzy ci prezentują do naśladowania swym wiernym. Teksty Orygenesa, Hieronima, Cyryla Jerozolimskiego, Jana Damasceńskiego, Zenona z Werony, Piotra Chryzologa, Chromacjusza z Akwilei pozwalają zobaczyć, że oprócz wymiaru dogmatycznego ich wypowiedzi, są w nich również obecne ekshortacje duszpasterskie, z których najważniejsza jest jedna – życie wiarą na wzór Maryi.

    Godne przyjmowanie Eucharystii w listach św. Ambrożego i św. Augustyna

    The presented article aims to show the respect and dignity which have been given to the Eucharist since the fi rst centuries of Christianity. In a special way, this respect was demonstrated by the demands placed upon those who wanted to receive Holy Communion or even just participate in the celebration of the Eucharist. During the pontificate of St. Ambrose and St. Augustine, on the basis of their letters, two issues related to the worthy receiving of the Eucharist can be seen: in Ambrose - to deny the emperor participation in the Eucharist because of the massacres in Thessalonica and promoting pagan cults, in Augustine – the issue of the fasts. The presented article consists of three parts. First, it discusses the essence of the Eucharist shown in the letters of both bishops. Then, the position of St. Ambrose and the solution of St. Augustine. From the reading of their letters it appears that the proper and worthy receiving of the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ lied heavily on their minds, regardless of who the recipient of the letter was. In all texts there is a conclusion – the condition for a worthy receiving of the Body of the Lord, which is the Sacrament of unity, is abiding in the Catholic Church, and consequently following the ecclesiastical instructions and norms regarding either fasting or the issue of the reconciliation and penance.

    Pisma Orygenesa i Hieronima, które są bazą źródłową artykułu, choć w różnej formie literackiej – homilia i list – i napisane w innym celu i w różnym czasie, ukazują egzegezę 33. rozdziału Księgi Liczb, w którym opisane są postoje Narodu Wybranego na pustyni na drodze ku Ziemi Obiecanej. Oba dzieła są klasycznym przykładem interpretacji alegorycznej tekstu Pisma Świętego. Obaj autorzy interpretują 42 postoje podczas wędrówki Izraela po pustyni przede wszystkim jako Boży plan duchowego rozwoju chrześcijanina, lecz także obecne są w ich rozważaniach elementy eschatologiczne. W prezentowanym artykule ukazane są eschatologiczne idee obecne w obu interpretacjach wędrówki Narodu Wybranego ku Ziemi Obiecanej, źródła ich interpretacji, ich podobieństwa i różnice, zależność Hieronima od Orygenesa w jego interpretacji postojów na pustyni, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem idei eschatologii zrealizowanej w dziele Aleksandryjczyka. Orygenes w swej interpretacji przedstawił bogaty obraz eschatologicznej nadziei, podczas gdy Hieronim niemal w ogóle nie wspomina w swym liście o nadziei na drodze ku Bogu po śmierci.
