    Descartes, Kant, and Swinburne on Human Soul

    This paper addresses two issues in Richard Swinburne’s book Are We Bodies or Souls? I interpret Swinburne’s modal argument as an example of a priori synthetic knowledge. Swinburne’s thesis that every person possesses “thisness” is compared with Kant’s distinction between the empirical character and the intelligible character.

    Dobro i zło moralne jako próba dla dusz ludzkich. Elementy etyki sumienia

    Pierwsza część artykułu poświęcona jest różnym rozumieniom etyki jako dyscypliny filozoficznej. W części drugiej zostaje rozważona natura sumienia jako podstawy wiedzy na temat dobra i zła moralnego oraz odróżnione są trzy warstwy ludzkiego sumienia. Trzecia część artykułu dotyczy pojęcia próby moralnej, przy czym tezą jest to, że Bóg Stwórca poddaje wszystkie osoby próbie moralnej wyboru między dobrem i złem. Aby tego rodzaju próba moralna mogła mieć miejsce, potrzebna jest „wrodzona” zdolność do odróżniania dobra i zła, czyli sumienie. The first part of the article is devoted to various understandings of ethics as a philosophical discipline. The second part considers the nature of conscience as the basis of knowledge about moral good and evil and distinguishes three layers of human conscience. The third part of the article concerns the concept of moral test, with the thesis being that God, the Creator, subjects all persons to a moral test of choosing between good and evil. In order for this type of moral test to take place, an “innate” ability to distinguish good from evil is necessary, which is conscience.
