    Respiritualiser le roman sans âme. Une lecture de La Femme pauvre de Léon Bloy

    Nous voudrions montrer comment Bloy se révolte contre le roman de son temps en cherchant à respiritualiser un modèle trop matérialiste et positiviste. L’étude de La Femme pauvre met au jour, à l’inverse du roman de son époque, la volonté bloyenne de faire voir les rouages invisibles d’une mécanique divine dont les personnages romanesques ne sont que des ombres projetées et incarnées, et non des fac-simile d’acteurs sociaux obéissant à des lois que l’étude de la société suffirait à déterminer. Ce roman révèle le rôle que Bloy fixe à l’écrivain : être au service de la Parole de Dieu, ce qui tranche avec celui de l’observateur neutre, sorte de Claude Bernard naturaliste. Il souligne aussi la mission que Bloy assigne précisément au genre romanesque, par contraste avec d’autres genres littéraires, comme le pamphlet, qu’il utilise également. The aim of this paper is to show how Bloy, by seeking to re-spiritualize an overly materialistic and positivist model, revolted against the tropes which characterized fiction in his lifetime. Unlike most turn-of-the-century fiction, La Femme pauvre brings to light Bloy’s desire to show the invisible workings of a divine mechanism in which fictional characters are only projected, incarnate shadows, rather than facsimiles of social actors obeying laws that the study of society would suffice to determine. Such a novel reveals the role that Bloy set for the writer, that of being in the service of the Word of God, which contrasts with that of the neutral observer, a kind of naturalist Claude Bernard, as well as the mission he precisely assigns to the genre of fiction, in contrast to other literary genres, such as the pamphlet, which he also uses.
